Journey along the Murray, Vic

Follow Australia’s longest river – the mighty Murray – across Victoria, from the charming northern Victorian town of Wodonga, where you’ll experience a rich sense of history, to the port of Echuca, where paddlesteamers cruise the waters. Then turn northwest to Mildura, known as the “Mediterranean of the outback” for its proximity to the Murray’s pristine waters and exceptional food and wineries.
This Victorian road trip might only take around seven hours from first town to last, but settling into each destination guarantees you won’t miss a thing. Read on for your travel guide filled with the best things to do at every stop.

Wodonga Itinerary

Situated in the centre of town, within easy reach of shops, eateries and museums, the accessible-accredited Quest Wodonga offers 79 stylish, fully-serviced apartments. In the warmer months, make use of the onsite pool or head to the banks of the river for a dip, and in the winter months you’re around a 90-minute drive from the snowy slopes of Falls Creek.



Miss Amelie
This modern-European restaurant, housed within the beautiful heritage Railway Station building less than a five-minute drive from Quest Wodonga, is a must. Make a night of it with the six-course chef’s choice degustation menu, which includes such sumptuous dishes as steak tartare with smoky egg yolk and cornichon, and braised lamb with parsnip, freekeh, macadamia and apple. And the desserts are almost too pretty to eat – almost.
Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk
Drive over the 163-year-old Union Bridge, only 10 minutes from Quest Wodonga, and you’re in New South Wales. On Kremur Street you’ll find the beginning of the five-kilometre Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk, which finishes in the Wonga Wetlands. Along the way you’ll discover 15 ancient First Nations stories told by local artists through contemporary sculptures.
Schmidt's Strawberry Winery
One of the most unique wineries in Australia, Schmidt’s will have you humming “Strawberry Fields Forever” as you look over acres of lush strawberry vines. Located 20 minutes from Quest Wodonga, you can buy fresh strawberries here at certain times of year, and strawberry wine all year round. It comes in three strengths – sweet, medium and dry – and there’s also a strawberry liqueur for those after something a little stronger.
Mungabareena Reserve and Water Works
A 10-minute drive over state lines will bring you to Mungabareena Reserve, a site of cultural importance to First Nations people as it was once a meeting place. Today, it’s the spot locals head to for swimming, picnicking, fishing, and to immerse in nature. The nearby Water Works Regional Park, back on the Victorian side of the great Murray, is another popular spot for swimming. Eyes peeled for a platypus!
Bonegilla Migrant Experience
Post World War II, Australia received hundreds of thousands of migrants, many of them from Europe. Around 80,000 of them initially settled in Bonegilla, a short drive from Quest Wodonga. The Bonegilla Migrant Experience is a guided tour where you can learn about the stories of emigrants – with one in 20 Australians linked to Bonegilla through grandparents or other relatives, the experience holds personal resonance for many visitors.

Echuca Itinerary

Developed as a river port in the 1800s, today Echuca is the place to try out a host of water activities, a trip on a paddle steamer being chief among them. After a day of exploration, settle in at Quest Echuca, which sits a short distance from the banks of the Murray River. Accessible accredited, the property is close to restaurants, cafes and bars and even has a pool for those who fancy a quiet dip.



Murray River Paddlesteamers
Hop aboard a fully restored paddleboard steamboat for a sail down the river – kids are even encouraged to have a go at steering. A dinner cruise that takes you along the river as the sun is setting is a stunning way to take in the majestic scenery of the Murray and comes with a three-course meal.
Billabong Ranch
There's something for everyone at Billabong Ranch, less than a 15-minute drive from Quest Echuca, from horse and pony rides to rock climbing, archery and mini golf – plus, a cafe for refuelling in between adventures. Visit the animal nursery, where you can feed lambs, pat bunnies and say hello to Rodney the longhorn steer and Wilson the emu.
St Anne’s Winery
A few blocks from Quest Echuca, St Anne’s Winery is widely known for its award-winning selection of diverse drops, from dry whites to spicy reds. Linger at the cellar door for free wine and port tastings, held every day of the week, and pick up some Echuca chocolate as a souvenir.
Port 53
Head a block north of Quest Echuca and you’ll find Port 53, a casual family restaurant serving up hearty dishes with a Southern twist, like seafood jambalaya, fried chicken waffles and barbecue steak, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. Don’t miss the beignets on the dessert menu – fried donuts with caramel sauce.
The Great Aussie Beer Shed and Heritage Farm Museum
If Australiana is your thing you won’t want to miss this – as well as hosting a collection of over 20,000 famous beer cans from all over the world, there’s also the Big Lager (a lesser known entry in the roll call of Australia’s iconic Big Things). This unique space plays host to three other museums: The Horse Drawn Carriage Museum, The Car and Heritage Farm Museum and The Great Australiana Museum.

Mildura Itinerary

Explore the vibrant culture, fresh food and award-winning wines of Mildura, right on the border of New South Wales and Victoria. Set yourself up in one of the spacious studio, one-bedroom or two-bedroom apartments at Quest Mildura then head out to explore the best of this dynamic region.



Trentham Estate Winery
Wander through the vineyards before stopping by the cellar door for wine-tasting at the award-winning Trentham Estate. Or head straight to the restaurant, drink in a chilled glass of prosecco (one of its best-sellers) while overlooking the river. Order from a menu that includes pan-fried barramundi fillet with salsa verde, confit duck leg with apple and parsnip puree, and even chicken nuggets for the kids.
The Province
This restaurant, around four blocks from your apartment, plates up award-winning Italian fare inspired by chef Matt De Angelo’s grandmother and sourced from local ingredients. Tuck into house-baked bread and pasta dishes like spaghetti with Moreton Bay bugs, chilli, garlic and capers and wagyu carpaccio with black garlic and mascarpone. The poached pear with mascarpone cream and granola is a popular choice for dessert.
Dockside Marina
Enjoy a day on the water at Dockside Marina, right on the river, where you can hire a waterski, kayak or small tinnie to take in the natural beauty of the Murray. There is also a cafe here, great for refuelling or to enjoy fish and chips with a cold beer once you’ve docked.
Sunraysia Farmers Market
Held every first and third week of the month, the Sunraysia Farmers Market brims with freshly picked flowers, fruit and vegetables, locally made spirits, Mildura honey and cute giftware. Treat yourself to a hot breakfast from one of the vendors while the kids enjoy a pony ride and live music.
Mungo National Park
If you’ve come all this way, you can’t leave without crossing the border and heading to Mungo National Park in NSW. Around a 90-minute drive from Quest Mildura, this natural wonder has an otherworldly landscape – many visitors liken it to Mars – and a powerful ancient history that you can learn about during a tour with an Aboriginal guide.
